Movie Review: Mao's Last Dancer

I think that the movie Mao's Last Dancer was a very interesting True Story/Romance movie, set in three different places, which were a rural city in China, Beijing and Texas. The movie was a bout a Chinese person called Li who lives in a rural area in China as a child, then gets picked to become a military dancer, and then later gets chosen again to go to summer school in Texas.

After being in the states, Li decides he really likes Texas. He lives with a person called Ben and meets Elizabeth, Lori, Mary, etc. Li does so much better than he did in China, and he decides to stay in the USA but the Chinese government wants him to return to his home country. Li quickly solves this problem without thinking it through and marries a girl he met not long ago to be able to stay in the states. Then he is forbidden to return to China ever again.l I think that was a really bad decision made by Li, even though it was very complicated. He chose dance over family through a process that was not very smart. I think that he should have kept on trying to persuade the government until they would allow him to stay.

In the movie, there is a story of a frog in a well. I thought that had a really deep meaning. It was about how a frog lived in a well and he thought the well was the only world there was but another frog came along from outside and told him to come out and see the rest of the world. I thought it meant the world you know is not the only world that exists, and somewhere else unfamiliar people are doing different things and you should respect that and learn things and try new things.

There was also a person in the movie who was Li's teacher, and he inspired him to do ballet. The person in my life that really inspires me is my mother. She has taught me so many life skills and I want to tell others about her wonderful ideas. My mother has inspired me to do, start and try so many new things. Also my father really inspires me too. He works all day and comes back usually when I'm sleeping, and I really appreciate that he works all day for his family which I'm part of and I want to be a good person like him when I grow up.

In conclusion, this movie was pretty good and I would give it a 3 out of 5 with 1 being "never watching again never even mentioning again" and 5 being "I could watch this all day long". The 3 means "Not bad, but not great either". Overall this movie was a very interesting movie. But overall I thought it was very intriguing to watch a person's childhood to who the person is now as an adult.  I never thought that it would be so interesting to watch just one person's life and how it changes as time passes.

  1. Structure of this movie review was good. It made me easier to read through the essay. In the part about "a frog in a well," I recommend you to explain the story by comparing it with the movie. For example, you could state that a frog means Li in the movie and a well means China. Nice Job!
